Mary Lucy (Newnham) Carlson, of King of Prussia, PA passed away peacefully on February
23rd, 2024. Mary, daughter of William and Dorothy Newnham, was born on November 28th,
1930 in Johnstown, NY.
She is survived by her loving husband of 73 years, Rupert Carlson, 5 children- William Carlson
(Joy) Reno, NV; Janet Carlson Roslindale, MA; Jeffrey Carlson (Patty) Eagleville, PA; Dorothy
Childress (Don) Elk Grove Village, IL; Rena Staley (John) King of Prussia, PA; 10 grandchildren: Krista, Amy, Shawn, Michael, Kara, Emily, Felicia, Jared, Jack, Rella, great grandson Bodhi,

Mary went to Johnstown High School and Mildred Elley Business School. She loved growing
up in a small town where she was the only girl on the boys baseball team and excelled at many
other sports. As a child she got to see some of the all time great baseball players, like Jackie
Robinson and Joe DiMaggio. She also attended the famous 1939 World’s Fair. Mary met
Rupert on a bus in Texas and he proposed on the 2nd date. They were married on the same
day Elizabeth Taylor got married (the first time). Her greatest joy in life were her children and
grandchildren. Mary was passionate about sports and politics. She gave to many charities
and wanted to see the world become a better place. She loved snowy days, playing cards,
metal detecting and spending time with family on the phone or in person. She loved giving out
full size candy bars on Halloween. Finally, she always wanted it to be told “I tried, but I died”.
Internment will be private, at the request of the family.
Memorial contributions could be made in Mary’s honor to the Upper Merion Area Community
